🥋 Taekwondo Belt-Wise Skill Curriculum
1. White Belt → Yellow Belt (Beginner)
| White Belt: Purity and a blank slate, representing the start of the journey with no prior knowledge. Yellow Belt: The earth, symbolising the planting of the foundation and the first rays of knowledge. |
| Goal: Foundation, discipline, and basics. Time: 6 months to 1 Year |
| Basics: – Stances: Attention stance, ready stance, front stance, walking stance – Strikes: Basic punches (jab, cross), hammer fist – Blocks: Low block, middle block – Kicks: Front kick (Ap chagi), Low roundhouse kick (Dollyo chagi) Poomsae (Forms): Taeguk Il Jang (Poomsae 1) Sparring: One-step sparring (basic attack/defense) Self-defense: Wrist grab release (1–2 techniques) Fitness: Push-ups: 5 to 10; Squats: 20; Plank: 30 sec Theory: Meaning of Taekwondo, Dojang etiquette Breaking (optional): Paper break with front kick |
2. Yellow Belt → Green Belt
| Green Belt: A sprouting plant, showing growth and the development of skills. |
| Goal: Coordination, balance, and first combinations. Time: 6 months to 1 Year |
| Basics: – Stances: Back stance, cat stance – Strikes: Knife-hand strike, ridge-hand strike – Blocks: Knife-hand block, rising block – Kicks: Side kick (Yop chagi), Roundhouse kick (Dollyo chagi) (medium height) Poomsae: Taeguk Ee Jang (Poomsae 2) Sparring: 3-step sparring (set movements) Self-defense: Basic joint lock, push defense Fitness: Push-ups: 10 to 20; Squats: 30; Plank: 45 sec Theory: History of Taekwondo, meaning of belt colors Breaking: Wooden board (front kick or hammer fist) |
3. Green Belt → Blue Belt
| Blue Belt: The sky, towards which the plant grows, representing progress and a deeper understanding. |
| Goal: Power and controlled sparring. Time: 6 months to 1 Year |
| Basics: – Stances: Fighting stance, cross stance – Strikes: Elbow strikes (horizontal & downward) – Blocks: Double knife-hand block, inside block – Kicks: Hook kick, Crescent kick, Back kick (intro) Poomsae: Taeguk Sam Jang & Sa Jang (Poomsae 3 & 4) Sparring: Light-contact free sparring (2–3 rounds) Self-defense: Bear hug escape, headlock escape Fitness: Push-ups: 20 to 30; Squats: 50; Plank: 60 sec Theory: Taekwondo tenets (Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control, Indomitable spirit) Breaking: Side kick on board |
4. Blue Belt → Red Belt
| Red Belt: The sun, signifying increasing power, but also a warning to exercise control and caution. |
| Goal: Advanced techniques & competitive sparring. Time: 6 months to 1 Year |
| Basics: – Strikes: Spear-hand strike, multiple strike combos – Blocks: Palm block, reinforced block – Kicks: Spinning back kick, Tornado kick, Axe kick (Naeryo chagi) Poomsae: Taeguk Oh Jang & Yuk Jang (Poomsae 5 & 6) Sparring: Continuous sparring with scoring rules Self-defense: Multiple attacker defense, choke escape Fitness: Push-ups: 30 to 40; Squats: 75; Plank: 90 sec Theory: Olympic Taekwondo rules, philosophy of martial arts Breaking: Jumping front kick, turning kick on board |
5. Red Belt → Black Stripe → Black Belt (DAN 1)
| Black Belt: The opposite of white; maturity, mastery, and imperviousness to fear, marking the beginning of advanced training. |
| Goal: Mastery, leadership, and teaching ability. Time: 6 months to 1 Year |
| Basics: – Advanced striking & combinations (mixing hands & legs) – Counterattacks and fakes – Mastery of stances & movement transitions Poomsae: Taeguk Chil Jang, Pal Jang, Koryo (Poomsae 7, 8, and 9) Sparring: Full-contact, competition-ready sparring Self-defense: Knife defense, stick defense (basic disarms) Fitness: Push-ups: 40 to 60; Squats: 100; Plank: 180 sec Theory: Role of a black belt, leadership, teaching juniors Breaking: Multiple boards, flying side kick, combination breaks |
